Els lavabos ocupen una posició singular dins les dinàmiques espacials, ja que se situen en la intersecció entre els àmbits públic i domèstic i qüestionen alhora la dicotomia públic/ privat. Tradicionalment generitzats i sovint associats al reforç de normes socials opressives, els lavabos han estat també teoritzats com a espais ambivalents, on coexisteixen regulació, vulnerabilitat i resistència. Aquest estudi analitza la representació dels lavabos a la sèrie d’HBO Girls i mostra com els personatges feminitzats, dins d’una economia representacional estructurada per la blanquitud, utilitzen estratègies similars per construir espais d’intimitat en lavabos públics i domèstics. L’article introdueix el concepte d’intimitat col· lectiva per ampliar les concepcions dominants de la intimitat més enllà dels marcs sexuals o romàntics, i posa en primer pla pràctiques de cura, negociació, conflicte i solidaritat. En replantejar el lavabo, tradicionalment entès com un espai altament individualitzat i privat dins els entorns urbans colonials i moderns, com un lloc d’interacció social i d’experiències emocionals compartides, l’estudi desafia l’ideal arrelat de la privacitat burgesa blanca i destaca la rellevància política i relacional dels espais quotidians per als subjectes feminitzats.
