Abstract

The Departament de Geografia of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, in collaboration with the Institute for Women (Instituto de la Mujer), organized a conference on «Agriculture, Gender and Space» on the 10th and 11th of December 1987. The conference brought together investigators from Geography and from other branches of the Social Sciences who are interested in the problem of gender structure in society. The participants included M. Berlan, J. Monk and J. Momsen, specialists and pioneers in such subjects, together with several members of the Department, namely G. Cànoves, M. D. Garcia-Ramon, M. Solsona and A. F. Tulla. Certain problems, common to the different investigators, were identified and analysed, such as the insufficiency of official statistics, the multiactivity of female labour, and the necessity for an improvement in the qualifications of women employed in agriculture. The Conference is a step towards the objective of diffusing and integrating the gender approach in geographical analysis.
