Abstract

On the 15th and 16th of March 1991 Venice held a congress named «Metropolitan Cities and Regional Development in Italy. Debating the Cities», and organized by the Italian Association of Regional Science in collaboration with the University of Studies of Venice. Sixteen papers were presented debating the functions of the Italian metropolitan areas created by a new law on the Reform of Local Councils. The new law, explicitely recognizing for Italy the need of matching local administrative structures to current functions, presents, however, several problems. During the three working sessions methodological problems as well as specific problems of the cities in defining the geographical setting of their metropolitan areas were discussed.
