The cartography inventory: methodology and practice

Abstract

We have reproduced in full in this publication the methodological introduction that we wrote for the management of the cartographic inventory of the Geography Department of the U.A.B. It seemed to us that these sheets sufficiently showed the way of describing, indexing and classifying cartographic documents. For a more specific text, we have explicitly added the reproduction of the corresponding tokens in the inventory of a sample document and fragments of the thematic and toponymic index. The reasons for the difficulty of establishing a regulatory system for the cataloguing of cartographic documents lie first of all in the choice of the criterion of individualisation of the documents. Secondly, the definition of descriptors is very problematic due to their great variety. The solutions adopted in our inventory are only some of the many possible ones. We hope that they will be useful and inspiring.
