From the research on fear to the fear in the research. Thinking about women’s feelings and perceptions of insecurity in fieldwork
Abstract
This article analyses the expression of social fears in the academic context, in particular, the insecurity feelings experienced by many women when doing fieldwork, as a result of their gender condition. Studying the ways by which women’s fears are constructed, transmitted and reproduced within society and how they affect the performance of their tasks as researchers, this article focuses on the socially generated divisions of time and space and their consequences for women, as individuals and researchers. Women’s need to take possession of the public sphere is therefore outlined, as an action that must accompany and be accompanied by the practice of their activities as researchers, in a parallel process of social and academic emancipation.
