Pierre Birot and his significance in spanish geomorphology

Abstract

This obituary note on Pierre Birot (19041984) emphasizes. above all his importance in geomorphological studies on the Iberian Peninsula. He contributed in an extraordinary measure to their modernization, beginning with his Doctorate Thesis on the Pyrenees. His major contributions on this mountain chain are explained and contrasted to other morphological interpretations. The bibliography includes his most important works on Portugal, Galicia, the Central Cordillera and South and Southeastern Spain. A brief evaluation of his contribution to general ideas on geomorphology and a list of his major works on the subject in also included.
