The impact of the pandemic on residential mobility in the Canary Islands: The peculiarities of island spaces
Abstract
The expansion of SARS-CoV-2 led to a great transformation in terms of mobility on a global and local scale, since forced immobility was added to the modification of daily movement patterns and residential variation. Spatial organisation played a decisive role in this, with the insular nature of the Canary Islands being key. Thus, the general objective of this research project was to identify the differentiated impact of residential mobility during the pandemic, for which the Statistics of Residential Variations (2019-2021) were used, as well as a survey carried out between April 26 and June 21, 2022, and the issues covered included migration processes, change of dwelling and second homes. The results obtained added nuances to the mobility trends that were observed in other areas of Spain due to the insular nature of the islands themselves.
