Adaptation to climate change in Spanish tourist destinations: Critical analysis of media framing
Abstract
The impacts of climate change on tourism activity have intensified adaptation efforts in Spain’s main tourist destinations, a development reflected in the media, which plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and policymaking. This article analyzes Spanish press coverage and media framing of tourism adaptation to climate change between 2021 and 2024. Drawing on a methodology that combines content analysis and media framing analysis, the study identifies the dominant frames, implications, and characteristics of adaptation emphasised in the media. The findings reveal a predominance of economically driven frames, with a strong emphasis on the actions and needs of the tourism sector. However, a considerable proportion of news stories adopt a planning-oriented perspective or focus on the development of local measures. The prominent presence of scientific references in the press suggests that the scientific community is likely to shape the future media framing on adaptation.
