Towards a New Regional Geography? Report on the seminar held in the City of the Four Rivers
Abstract
The first «Curs d'Estiu de Geografia» (Summer Geography Course) was held in Girona from 28th to 30th June 1989, within the framework of the «Cursos d'Estiu» (Summer Course Programme) organized jointly by l'Estudi General de Girona (Girona University College) and the Universidad Internacional Menéndez y Pelayo. The theme of this first course was regional geography, with the objective of stimulating serious discussion on the validity of the regional concept, not only from some of the most innovating geographical view-pronts, but also from the perspective of other fields within the social and human sciences. The course constituted a profound rethinking on theoretical and methodological aspects of the regional concept, including a provocative reflection on the role that place, the spatial context, plays, or ought to play, in explaining social, political and economic phenomena which affect our daily life. The following text is a short report on the course.
