Seminar on Gender and Development (Newcastle, 1989)
Abstract
The Geography Department of the University of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (England), with de support of the Commonwealth Geographical Bureau, organized the seminar on Gender an Development that took place from the 16th to the 21st of April of 1989 in Newcastle. For that seminar more that eighty social researches and professors were presents, most of them in the field of geography and coming from countries members of the Commonwealth. The increasing interest shown for studies of gender was reflected in the large number of exposés: about forty. The central discussion theme was the role of women in agriculture and in rural development, and from this theme aspects like the following were dealt with: rural resources, formal and informal sectors of economy, human settlements, migrations and colonization and the perceptions of change.
