Abstract

Beaches are both vulnerable areas and, at the same time, highly appreciated leisure areas used by the majority of the population, and in particular, of the population of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region. However, little information exists on the users on the beaches, on the use made of them, and the reasons for it. With a new to their better management, it is also necessary to understand the users' perception and expectations. The methodology applied in this study has made it possible to analyse the characteristics of users' perception of the services and facilities provided and to evaluate the perception of various environmental aspects of the beaches. The conclusion reached is that there are obvious contradictions in such areas, because while constituting a socially necessary leisure resource, are at the same time unaware of their vulnerability. The priority problems are still urbanistic or environmentd, but not related to the beach area as such, but rather to the Metropolitan Area of the region as a whole, in which the beaches are included.
