A municipal quantification of usable wind power in Catalonia
Abstract
In the light of renewed interest aroused, in industrially developed societies, by the so-called 'new" sources of energy, which the author prefers to considerer both old sources (on account of their use at other periods of the history of humanity) and renewable sources (as opposed to fossil and fossil exhaustible ones), this study represents a contribution to the quantification of wind power in Catalonia.
Calculations were not based on meteorological statistics compliled by the Regional Centres of the National Institute of Meteorology but rather on questionnaires carried out in all Catalan municipalities. From a single statistic, later equated to average wind speed, it was possible to calculate the function density of probability of wind speed for each municipality. At the same time, two Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) with certain characteristics were selected and allocated values according to previously calculated wind distribution. Supposing (a) an adequate percentage of the area of each municipality dedicated to the capture of wind energy, and (b) a predetermined spatial distribution of the WECs, the aproximate wind energy potential was calculated on a municipal basis.
