Abstract

This text is a defence of the hypothesis that a generic approach to regional spatial analysis should be based on the consideration of the process of value production (defined as an independent variable which develops in the region) in relation to spatial articulation.

Indeed, the productive system, with regard to the location of production units and as moulder of social patterns, plays the role of resource claimant (especially of human resources). The type of dynamism which the system exercises over these resources (to the level of necessity or even surplus) will imply a reaction of attraction or rejection, generating consequences which include migratory movements that will vary in force according to the type of production.

As a result, the movement of the labour force and the population required for the reproduction of this force, will, in turn, generate its own dynamic effects on the requisites of housing and complementary services, and on the articulation of residential settlements. Moreover, this is a recurrent process.

The case study of Catalonia between 1955 and 1975 permits the application of this approach within spatial and temporal limits. For the period chosen, it is possible to distinguish clearly the sequence of the process and its consequences.
