Abstract

Over the past few decades, scientific attention and social mobilization regarding the role of agriculture in the use and management of the commons has gradually intensified. In this context, the multifunctionality of agriculture is increasingly considered as an approach able to integrate the productive function of agriculture with its environmental, heritage and landscape functions. This article aims to deepen the existing debate about the multifunctionality of agriculture and its social legitimacy as a mechanism for territorial management of the commons. For this purpose, we first conduct a review of the scientific literature and, secondly, use Eurobarometer reports to analyze the existing links between multifunctionality, sustainability of agriculture and its social legitimacy.
