Geographical distribution and Airbnb effects in mountain and rural areas: Case study of the tourist brands ‘Pirineus’ and ‘Val d’Aran’

Abstract

Airbnb has become the most important short-term tourist rental platform in the world. Although its effects have been extensively studied in urban areas and historical districts, little attention has been paid to inland rural and mountain areas. The aim of this study is to contribute to the scarce literature on the effects of Airbnb in rural areas; specifically, its spatial distribution, nature and typology, its relationship with the tourist supply and the socioeconomic impact on the rental market. To do this, statistical analysis of Pearson’s correlation and multiple linear regression models were used. The results show: (i) the professionalization of Airbnb, (ii) its concentration in areas with an existing tourist supply and a significant number of second and empty homes, and (iii) an effect of increasing prices in the rental market.
