Abstract

The main objective of this article is to show how the lack of drinking water in the household is directly related to the vulnerability of rural women in the global south, through a case study conducted in the Fúquene river basin, in Cundinamarca, Colombia. Through interviews with elderly women inhabitants of the Fúquene river basin, this article shows how the articulation between agency and vulnerability operates in contexts where women are excluded from decision-making and community participation scenarios as a result of the social construction of gender roles. It also argues that this vulnerability is differential, even within the same geographical space, and shows how it articulates itself with the state of the environment and water sources, but does not respond solely to this situation.
