Geospatial competence and digital literacy of the global dimension in secondary school students

Authors

Abstract

Geographical literacy is presented as one of the essential knowledges in compulsory training. The objective of this study is to analyse the spatial skills of secondary education students based on their knowledge of global geographical content and their geospatial competence. The methodology has been based on the use of an online questionnaire with content of economic, social, demographic and physical geography, as well as the geolocation of territorial units of the world in virtual cartography. The participating sample is made up of 275 third-year secondary school students from the Balearic Islands. The results show low geographical literacy and a lack of geospatial competencies. The importance of the media, spatial distance, and the size of the territorial units are verified in terms of their recognition and correct geolocation. This research involves a diagnosis of the teaching of geography and proposes changes in its didactics.
