Water security and the hydro-social cycle in Catalonia: Diagnosis and challenges for a country under pressure

Abstract

Water security is one of the most pressing challenges in the face of the growing impacts of climate change, especially in Catalonia, a territory under high pressure on water resources. This article examines water security through the hydro-social cycle framework, integrating physical, economic, social, and environmental dimensions. It analyzes key challenges such as recurrent droughts, inequalities in access and affordability, water governance, and ecosystem impacts. The study highlights the importance of addressing these issues in an interdisciplinary way, incorporating technological, political, and social perspectives to ensure a sustainable and equitable management of water resources. Through an analysis of the Catalan context, this study identifies the main risks and challenges in a scenario of climate change and increasing social inequalities, emphasizing the need for a more inclusive and resilient approach to water planning.
